Miss USA Crown

Today is a sad day in the entertainment world: off hand three tragedies, including this one, come to mind – soul legend Solomon Burke passed away, while race car driver Shane Hmiel is in critical condition after crashing his car last night in Terre Haute Action Track in Indianapolis…Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the fans, friends and family members of these entertainers.

Just over 40-years ago Leona Gage was crowned Miss USA – a title she would only hold for a single day. After the pageant committee discovered that she was a wife and mother of two, they immediately stripped her of the crown. In addition, reports have recently surfaced suggesting that she lied about her age by saying she was 21 when in reality she was 18. Which also could have played a factor in the decision to revoke her title.

As a biography, Mary Leona Gage was born in 1939 in Longview, Texas. In 1957, she was crowned Miss USA as the representative for Maryland. The next day the title was stripped due to scandalous proceedings. Initially after she lost the crown her level of fame received a boost, as she made appearances on numerous talk shows to discuss the matter. Later on she moved to Las Vegas and became a showgirl at the Hotel Tropicana. She was married six times, and had five children, three of whom survived her.
